Analysis of the Purple Ball Gown and the Ballroom Moment in Enchanted
I feel like writing a thesis for college graduation, writing that title
Anyways, here’s my take on that particular moment in the movie Enchanted; courtesy of celebrating its arrival yesterday. Note in mind that this is only a person’s analysis
The whole ballroom was filled with people dressed in fairy tale or kings and queens costumes (BTW you get a hint of Aladdin homage here), and Giselle was the only one who arrived in a “now” gown. It shows that people actually craves to have a bit of fantasy. A bit of fun and excitement; a night off of the real world, if you will. Everyone was entering that fairy tale zone, hoping that they can get whatever that was left from the fairy tales.
Giselle, however, was the one who was showed, ready to step into reality. She showed up in a gorgeous gown; modern, yet if you notice it carefully, it still has some of that fairy tale-y feel in it.
See, to me, her dress is more than just a dress. It’s a symbol of who she is.
Everything was worked from top to bottom. The upper part shows the beginning of her transforming period.
Notice the lower part of her gown; and how it flutters whenever she twirls. That’s that bit of fairy tale she still has in herself. While she doesn’t mind stepping out and adjusting, trying to fit herself in this new world she was thrusted upon, she still embodies much of her previous characteristics and manner; bubbly, positive, kind…
Only now she’s a more mature person. Someone who knows pain and hurt and anger and can actually feel uncomfortable in situations.
Robert, meanwhile…
Is a broken, broken man who, with a hint of Giselle
is trying to believe in a happy ending once again. He is one of the real people, and this time he was willing to take a chance to step into the fairy tale world and have a sip of what it’s like. Hence his costume.
The whole thing was a switch. Giselle was entering our world, while everyone was looking for their fantasy way out. In the end, you’re left with a beautiful setting; and that’s what everyone craves. Balance in life.
